"**What this part does**
Combines the valve plate with its suction and discharge reed valves — the part that lets low-pressure gas into the cylinders, pushes high-pressure gas out to the condenser and seals the cylinder block against the cylinder head.
**Where it is installed**
The Valve Plate & Reed Valve Set is located between the cylinder block and the cylinder head, at the top of the compressor.
**Symptoms of a failed valve plate / reed valve set**
A worn or damaged valve plate / reed valve set shows up as one or more of these symptoms:
- Weak cooling, or cooling that fades away at idle
- Cooling takes much longer than normal
- Compressor knocking, ticking or chattering when the A/C engages
- Carbon deposit, scoring or a warped face found when the head is removed
- Gas blowing back and no cooling at all if a reed has broken
**When to replace**
Replace the plate and reeds together whenever the compressor is opened, or when the plate is warped, the face is scored or a reed is cracked or missing.
