"**What this part does**
Axially locates and retains the shaft, pulley / drive plate, valve parts and the shaft seal inside the compressor, so they cannot move out of position under load and vibration.
**Where it is installed**
The Shaft End Snap Ring (Circlip) (chamfered) is located in the retaining groove on the compressor shaft, pulley hub, valve assembly or shaft-seal bore.
**Symptoms of a failed snap ring**
A worn or damaged snap ring shows up as one or more of these symptoms:
- The pulley, drive plate or shaft develops axial play and rattles
- Metallic rattle or knock from the front of the compressor at idle
- Belt misalignment — belt squeal and rapid belt wear
- The shaft seal works loose and oil starts weeping at the front of the compressor
- The drive plate or pulley can slip or work off the shaft
- In valve positions the valve plate is no longer held square, giving internal leakage and weak cooling
**When to replace**
Replace the snap ring whenever the compressor is dismantled, and every time the shaft seal, pulley or valve assembly is renewed. Never re-use a ring that has been opened — fit a new one.
**Why choose this part**
Supplied as a direct replacement for the original part. Always compare the dimensions, hole layout and finish with your original part before ordering.
**Ordering note**
Snap rings are matched by groove diameter, ring thickness and end style (chamfered / wire / external-internal). Compare thickness and diameter with the original ring before ordering.
