"**What this part does**
Seals the rotating shaft against the front housing so compressor oil and refrigerant cannot escape, and so air and moisture cannot be drawn into the refrigerant circuit.
**Where it is installed**
The Compressor Shaft Seal (EV / new-energy, new type) is located at the front of the compressor on the drive shaft, where the shaft passes through the front housing behind the pulley and drive plate.
**Symptoms of a failed shaft seal**
A worn or damaged shaft seal shows up as one or more of these symptoms:
- Oil stains or black oily dirt around the front of the compressor, on the clutch and inside the pulley
- Refrigerant loss with no leak found anywhere else — the system needs recharging again and again
- Cooling fades away over a few weeks and low-side pressure drops
- An oily film thrown onto the subframe or bonnet near the compressor
- Hissing or squealing from the front seal as the lip wears
- Compressor oil level falls and, if ignored, the compressor eventually seizes
**When to replace**
Replace whenever the compressor is opened, whenever oil is found at the front of the compressor, or whenever the system keeps losing refrigerant. Fit a new snap ring and O-ring at the same time.
**Why choose this part**
Supplied as a direct replacement for the original part. Always compare the dimensions, hole layout and finish with your original part before ordering.
**Ordering note**
Shaft seals differ by shaft diameter, housing bore and case style (rubber-bonded or metal-cased). Compare the dimensions and the case style with the original part.
